A Rushing Wind – Holy Spirit Devotional

"And suddenly there came from heaven a sound like a mighty rushing wind..." ~Acts 2:2

We're about three weeks out from Pentecost Sunday, which means most of us have already moved on from it. It happens every year. Easter gets the candles and the lilies and the packed pews. Pentecost gets…a mention and something red in the sanctuary.

But the Holy Spirit didn't get the memo about being easy to overlook.

I've had a fan running in my office for the last week because without it, the heat just sits there. The air doesn't move, and you don't notice how still it's gotten until you turn the fan on and finally feel it. That's the image at the center of this Holy Spirit devotional: most of us walk around in spiritually stale air for long stretches and don't notice until something moves.

Acts 2 describes the arrival of the Spirit as "a sound like a mighty rushing wind" (v. 2). That's not subtle. The disciples weren't sitting around wondering if something was happening — they knew. But before that morning, they'd spent the ten days after Jesus's ascension staying together, praying constantly, and selecting a new apostle.

The Mission Comes After the Spirit: A Holy Spirit Devotional

Here's what struck me re-reading that passage this week: Jesus told them to wait before He told them to go. "Stay in the city until you have been clothed with power from on high" (Luke 24:49). The mission comes after the Spirit — not before. We tend to reverse that. We launch into what we're supposed to do and ask God to bless the doing. But the disciples didn't leave Jerusalem until the power showed up.

Paul puts it plainly: "If the Spirit of Him who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, He who raised Christ Jesus from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies" (Romans 8:11). The same power that raised Jesus lives in you. That's not inspiration-poster language — that's a statement of fact. The Spirit isn't a seasonal gift that arrived in Acts 2 and faded. He's still here.

You may not feel it right now. The air in your life may feel very still. But the Spirit isn't absent when He's quiet. He's not waiting for you to earn a second wind. He's already there. The question is whether you're positioned to notice.

Turn the fan on. Show up to the Word, to prayer, to honest conversation with God — not because you feel something, but because you know Who's already present.

Pentecost wasn't a one-time event. It was the beginning.

Daily Practice: This week, before you start your day, pray one honest sentence: Holy Spirit, I need You today. Say it before the to-do list, before the phone, before the first cup of coffee. Not because the words are magic — but because you're choosing to remember Who's already in the room.
